Enhanced immune system
"G. lucidum polysaccharides modulate immune function both in vivo and in vitro..." extensively, "including promoting the function of antigen-presenting cells, mononuclear phygocyte system, humoral immunity, and cellular immunity." (*).
This study has found that some forms of reishi may alter inflammation pathways in white blood cells.
Reishi mushroom may improve gut flora (*).
Reduction of inflammation
The anti-inflammatory constituents of G. lucidum may be developed as value-added functional food for the prevention of inflammation (*).
In the conclusion of this study, the results "suggest the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and sedative effects (of Reishi mushrooms)... in vitro and in vivo".
Cancer treatment and support during chemotherapy
Reishi mushroom's immunomodulatory and antitumour activities are mainly attributed to it's two major active components: G. lucidum polysaccharides and G. lucidum triterpenoids. Specifically, it has shown to prevent and diminish prostate cancer (*)
Ganoderma lucidum has been shown to be effective against many types of tumors, and that the triterpenoid in G. lucidum is the bioactive component (*).
Some constituents of Reishi mushrooms can increase the activity of a type of white blood cell called "natural killer cells" in cancer patients (*).
Another study found that Reishi mushrooms can increase the number of other white blood cells (lymphocytes) in those with colorectal cancer (*).
In this study, 59% of over 4,000 breast cancer survivors had consumed Reishi mushrooms.
Here is a study about using Reishi mushrooms in collaboration with modern cancer treatments.
"It was found that aqueous extracts G. lucidum obtained from three different locations produced inhibitory effect on cancer cells and may have a potential therapeutic use for the prevention and treatment of this disease." (*).
"Further biochemical characterization of this ancient herbal remedy could hold promise for treating lung cancer" (*).
Building stamina & well-being with less fatigue and improved sleep
This study of a group of 48 breast cancer survivors found that quality of life was improved while fatigue was reduced after 4 weeks of using Reishi mushrooms.
G. lucidum triterpenoids (GLTs) may improve health when combined with other medications to treat fatigue syndrome (*).
The patients in this study reported less anxiety and depression and better quality of life when Reishi mushrooms were added to their diet.
In the conclusion of this study, the results "suggest the... analgesic and sedative effects (of Reishi mushrooms)... in vitro and in vivo"
Anti-viral properties
This study investigated the use of Reishi mushrooms in the treatment of HPV infections.
Here is another study that indicates Reishi mushrooms anti-viral properties.
The researchers concluded that G. lucidum "exhibited potent antiviral activity" in this study.
Amelioration of cardiovascular disease
Reishi mushrooms have natural antioxidative and hypocholesterolemic agents which may have therapeutic potentiality in the treatment of cardiovascular disease (*).
Improved Liver and kidney function
G. lucidum triterpenoids (GLTs) may improve health when combined with other medications to treat hepatitis (*)
Reishi may aid kidney function in diabetics (*).
Risks and side effects
Reishi mushroom may increase the risk of bleeding.
Talk to your doctor before using Reishi mushroom extract if you are using any form of blood thinners including anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, high blood pressure medications, aspirin, Ginkgo biloba, fish oil, etc.
